Ever since I started getting serious into mountain biking, I’ve always lusted over carbon rims. But why? The ultimate bling factor? Weight savings? Stiffness and accuracy? Rolling resistance? Maybe a little bit of all these things. Some say nothing beats a good wheelset, and now i’m a believer.
At first I didn’t think I would ever be able to afford carbon wheels, $3000? No way! Mediocre warranty? Don’t think so! Honestly who can afford to drop thousands of dollars on something you’re probably going to bash on rocks and dent up, and maybe eventually crack and then have to replace at full cost because there is not warranty for that. That was my dilemma, until I saw that Santa Cruz was developing their own brand of carbon rims, with a unheard of warranty, at a price I couldn’t believe! What kind of warranty? You break it, we replace it, free, no questions asked. Wow, hard to believe.
Well, long story short, I convinced my wife, traded my trip to Whistler, and picked up a set of the 30mm 29” wheels for my Yeti 5.5. At the time I was off the bike due to injury and couldn’t wait to give them a try. A month later, and time for a test ride. Wow! What a difference, it was immediately noticeable. Amazing stiffness, but not harsh, great tracking, and incredible acceleration. So far this year hasn’t been the best for me for being able to ride or train due to injuries. Surprisingly i’ve managed to get plenty of PR’s during my short time riding on my Reserve wheels. I believe one of biggest factors is the incredible acceleration of the carbon wheels. After leaving a corner or having to break, the wheels get back up to speed fast.
Rock gardens are another area of instant noticeability that i’m riding a quality set of carbon wheels. Absolutely no loss of tracking or bending of the rim. The bike just flies through with ultimate confidence. Excited to get more time on the bike and more tests of the carbon wheels, i’m assured with the fact that if I do any damage to my wheels that Santa Cruz with take care of me with no issues.
